The Pixel 8a is the mid-range Pixel of 2024, released on May 14, 2024 at $499 in the US. It shares the Tensor G3 chip and a seven-year update promise with the Pixel 8 but uses a plastic back and a smaller feature set. It suits buyers who want Pixel software at a lower price.
The phone uses the Google Tensor G3 (4 nm) with 8GB of LPDDR5X RAM and 128GB or 256GB of UFS 3.1 storage. Google promises seven years of OS and security updates. SpecHub has not benchmarked the phone.
The 6.1-inch OLED display has 1080 x 2400 pixels and a refresh rate of 60-120Hz, with 1,400 nits for HDR and up to 2,000 nits peak. These figures match the Pixel 8, though the 8a is a bit smaller in screen area.
The rear cameras are a 64MP main with optical stabilisation and a 13MP ultrawide. The front camera is 13MP. There is no telephoto lens. SpecHub has not tested image quality.
The battery is 4492 mAh with fast wired charging and Qi wireless charging. Wattage figures are not listed because they could not be verified. We have no endurance tests.
The phone launched with Android 14. It supports Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.3 and NFC, and has an in-screen fingerprint sensor. It is rated IP67 and supports eSIM.
Buyers who want modern Pixel features and long software support at a mid-range price will find it a strong match.
People who want a glass back, IP68 or a telephoto lens should look at the Pixel 8 or 8 Pro. Those who want Wi-Fi 7 should check the Pixel 8.
The Pixel 8a gives mid-range buyers the Tensor G3 and a seven-year update promise. Its plastic back and Wi-Fi 6E are the main compromises.
