Phone Overview
The iPhone 13 Pro is the compact Pro model of Apple's 2021 lineup, released on September 24, 2021 at $999 in the US. It introduced ProMotion to the iPhone, with a 10-120Hz refresh range, along with a 3x telephoto lens and a macro-capable ultrawide camera. It was aimed at buyers who wanted the most capable standard-size iPhone. It is now an older phone.
Performance and Processor
The Apple A15 Bionic is a 5 nm chip with a six-core CPU and a five-core GPU, one more GPU core than the standard iPhone 13. Independent sources report 6GB of RAM, which Apple does not publish. Storage is 128GB, 256GB, 512GB or 1TB with no card slot. SpecHub has not benchmarked the phone.
Display Experience
The 6.1-inch LTPO Super Retina XDR OLED display has 1170 x 2532 pixels (about 460 ppi) and an adaptive refresh rate from 10Hz to 120Hz. Apple rates it for 1,000 nits typical and up to 1,200 nits peak in HDR. The variable rate is meant to save power on static content.
Camera Experience
The rear cameras are a 12MP main (f/1.5, sensor-shift stabilization), a 12MP telephoto (f/2.8, 3x optical zoom) and a 12MP ultrawide (f/1.8, autofocus), which enables close-up macro photography. A LiDAR scanner is also fitted. The front camera is 12MP. Video goes up to 4K at 60 fps, with ProRes video support. SpecHub has not tested image quality.
Battery and Charging
Apple does not publish battery capacity. Independent sources report 3095 mAh, slightly lower than the 3227 mAh reported for the iPhone 13. Apple states about 50% in 30 minutes with a 20W or higher adapter, which is not included. Wireless charging supports MagSafe at up to 15W and Qi at up to 7.5W. We have no endurance tests, and an older battery may hold less charge today.
Software and Features
The phone launched with iOS 15 and supports 5G, Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.0, NFC and Ultra Wideband. It has Face ID, a LiDAR scanner, MagSafe and an IP68 rating up to 6 metres for 30 minutes.
Who Should Consider This Phone?
People who want a smooth 120Hz screen, a telephoto lens and macro photography in a standard-size older iPhone will find it a good match.
Who May Prefer Another Phone?
Buyers who want a larger screen and the biggest battery should look at the iPhone 13 Pro Max. Those who do not need ProMotion or a telephoto lens can choose the iPhone 13.
