The iPhone 16 Plus is the large standard model of Apple's 2024 lineup, announced on September 9, 2024 and released on September 20 at $899 in the US. It has the same A18 chip and cameras as the iPhone 16 in a 6.7-inch body with a much larger reported battery. It was aimed at buyers who wanted a big screen and long battery life without paying for the Pro Max.
The Apple A18 is a 3 nm chip with a six-core CPU (two cores at up to 4.04 GHz) and a five-core GPU. Independent sources report 8GB of RAM, up from 6GB on the iPhone 15 Plus; Apple does not publish this figure. Storage is 128GB, 256GB or 512GB with no card slot. SpecHub has not benchmarked the phone.
The 6.7-inch Super Retina XDR OLED display has 1290 x 2796 pixels (about 460 ppi) and a 60Hz refresh rate. Apple rates it for up to 2,000 nits of peak outdoor brightness. The Dynamic Island is retained, and ProMotion remains a Pro-only feature.
The rear cameras are a 48MP main (Fusion camera) and a 12MP ultrawide, with no telephoto lens. The front camera is 12MP. The Camera Control button gives quick access to the camera and its settings. Lens apertures and video modes are omitted because we could not verify them for this page. SpecHub has not tested image quality.
Apple does not publish battery capacity. Independent sources report 4674 mAh, compared with 3561 mAh reported for the iPhone 16 and 4383 mAh for the iPhone 15 Plus. Apple states about 50% in 30 minutes with a 20W or higher adapter, which is not included. Wireless charging supports MagSafe and Qi2 at up to 15W. We have no endurance tests.
The phone launched with iOS 18 and supports Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 5.3, NFC and second-generation Ultra Wideband. It has Face ID, Crash Detection, Emergency SOS via satellite, the Action button and Camera Control, and it is rated IP68.
People who want a large screen and a long-lasting battery in a current-generation standard iPhone will find it a good fit.
Buyers who want a 120Hz display or a telephoto lens should look at the iPhone 16 Pro Max or a newer Pro model. Those who prefer a smaller phone can consider the iPhone 16.
The iPhone 16 Plus offers a big screen, a large reported battery and the new Camera Control button. Its 60Hz display and lack of a telephoto lens are the main limits.
