The Pixel 8 is the standard model of Google's 2023 line, released on October 12, 2023 at $699 in the US, $100 more than the Pixel 7. It is smaller than the Pixel 7, with a 6.2-inch screen and a weight of 187 g. It suits buyers who want a compact Pixel with a long update promise.
The phone uses the Google Tensor G3 (4 nm) with 8GB of RAM and 128GB or 256GB of storage. Google promises seven years of OS and security updates. SpecHub has not benchmarked the phone.
The 6.2-inch OLED display has 1080 x 2400 pixels and a refresh rate of 60-120Hz, with 1,400 nits for HDR and up to 2,000 nits peak. That peak brightness is a step up from the 1,400 nits quoted for the Pixel 7. The Pixel 8 Pro has a larger, sharper display with a 1-120Hz range.
The rear cameras are a 50MP main with optical stabilisation and a 12MP ultrawide. The front camera is 10.5MP. There is no telephoto lens. SpecHub has not tested image quality.
The battery is 4575 mAh with 27W wired charging and 18W Qi wireless charging, plus Battery Share reverse wireless charging. We have no endurance tests.
The phone launched with Android 14. It supports Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 5.3 and a USB-C 3.2 port, and has face unlock and an in-screen fingerprint sensor. It is rated IP68.
People who want a compact Pixel with a bright display and years of updates will find it a good match.
Buyers who want a telephoto lens, a larger screen or a larger battery should look at the Pixel 8 Pro. Those on a budget may prefer the Pixel 8a.
