Phone Overview
The iPhone 12 Pro Max is the largest model of Apple's 2020 lineup, released on November 13, 2020 at $1,099 in the US. It shares its chip with the rest of the family, but has a 6.7-inch screen, a larger main-camera sensor with sensor-shift stabilization and a longer telephoto lens. It was aimed at buyers who wanted the best camera and the biggest battery. It is now an older phone.
Performance and Processor
The Apple A14 Bionic is a 5 nm chip with a six-core CPU and a four-core GPU. Independent sources report 6GB of RAM, which Apple does not publish. Storage is 128GB, 256GB or 512GB with no card slot. SpecHub has not benchmarked the phone.
Display Experience
The 6.7-inch Super Retina XDR OLED display has 1284 x 2778 pixels (about 458 ppi) and a 60Hz refresh rate. Apple rates it for 800 nits typical and up to 1,200 nits peak in HDR, with Ceramic Shield protection.
Camera Experience
The rear cameras are a 12MP main (f/1.6, sensor-shift stabilization), a 12MP telephoto (f/2.2, 2.5x optical zoom) and a 12MP ultrawide (f/2.4, 120 degrees), plus a LiDAR scanner. The front camera is 12MP. Video goes up to 4K at 60 fps with Dolby Vision. SpecHub has not tested image quality.
Battery and Charging
Apple does not publish battery capacity. Independent sources report 3687 mAh, the largest of the iPhone 12 family. Apple states about 50% in 30 minutes with a 20W or higher adapter, which is not included. Wireless charging supports MagSafe at up to 15W and Qi at up to 7.5W. We have no endurance tests, and an older battery may hold less charge today.
Software and Features
The phone launched with iOS 14 and supports 5G, Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.0, NFC and Ultra Wideband. It has Face ID, a LiDAR scanner, MagSafe and an IP68 rating up to 6 metres for 30 minutes.
Who Should Consider This Phone?
People who want a large OLED screen, a long telephoto lens and the biggest 2020 iPhone battery in an older phone will find it a good fit.
Who May Prefer Another Phone?
Buyers who want a lighter phone, a 120Hz display or USB-C should look at a newer iPhone. Those who prefer a smaller body can consider the iPhone 12 Pro.
