This is an editorial analysis of the specifications listed on this page. It is not based on SpecHub lab testing, so it makes no claims about benchmarks, battery life or camera results. Manufacturer lab figures are not reproduced here.
The iPhone 14 is the standard model of Apple's 2022 lineup, released on September 16, 2022 at $799 in the US. It kept the A15 Bionic chip of the previous year but added Crash Detection, Emergency SOS via satellite, a new main camera and an autofocus front camera. It was aimed at buyers who wanted the main iPhone experience without paying for a Pro. It is now an older phone.
The iPhone 14 uses the Apple A15 Bionic (5 nm) with a six-core CPU and a five-core GPU, one more GPU core than the iPhone 13. Independent sources report 6GB of RAM, up from 4GB on the iPhone 13; Apple does not publish this figure. Storage is 128GB, 256GB or 512GB with no card slot. SpecHub has not benchmarked the phone.
The 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR OLED display has 1170 x 2532 pixels (about 460 ppi) and a 60Hz refresh rate. Apple rates it for 800 nits typical and up to 1,200 nits peak in HDR. It keeps the notch, because the Dynamic Island was limited to the iPhone 14 Pro models.
The rear cameras are a 12MP main (f/1.5, sensor-shift stabilization) and a 12MP ultrawide (f/2.4, 120 degrees), with no telephoto lens. The front camera is 12MP with autofocus (f/1.9). Apple lists 4K video up to 60 fps with Dolby Vision, a Cinematic mode and Action mode. SpecHub has not tested image quality.
Apple does not publish battery capacity. Independent sources report 3279 mAh, compared with 3227 mAh reported for the iPhone 13. Apple states about 50% in 30 minutes with a 20W or higher adapter, which is not included. Wireless charging supports MagSafe at up to 15W and Qi at up to 7.5W. We have no endurance tests, and an older battery may hold less charge today.
The phone launched with iOS 16 and supports 5G, Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.3, NFC and Ultra Wideband. It has Face ID, Crash Detection, Emergency SOS via satellite and an IP68 rating up to 6 metres for 30 minutes. SIM options differ by market: US models are eSIM only, international models take a Nano-SIM and an eSIM, and China models take two Nano-SIMs.
Buyers who want an affordable, up-to-date-feeling older iPhone with satellite SOS and Crash Detection will find it a good fit.
People who want a larger screen should consider the iPhone 14 Plus. Those who want a 120Hz display, the Dynamic Island or a telephoto lens should look at the iPhone 14 Pro or a newer model.
The iPhone 14 is a safe, well-rounded older iPhone with useful safety features. It is largely an iPhone 13 with a better camera, and its 60Hz screen and notch show its age.
