The iPhone 15 Pro Max is the top model of Apple's 2023 lineup, announced on September 12, 2023 and released on September 22 at $1,199 in the US. It has a titanium frame, the A17 Pro chip, an Action button, USB-C with USB 3 speeds and the first 5x telephoto lens on an iPhone. It was aimed at buyers who wanted the longest zoom and the largest screen. It is now an older phone.
The Apple A17 Pro is a 3 nm chip with a six-core CPU (two cores at up to 3.78 GHz) and a six-core GPU. Independent sources report 8GB of RAM, compared with 6GB for the iPhone 15 Plus; Apple does not publish this figure. Storage is 256GB, 512GB or 1TB with no card slot. SpecHub has not benchmarked the phone.
The 6.7-inch LTPO Super Retina XDR OLED display has 1290 x 2796 pixels (about 460 ppi) and an adaptive refresh rate from 1Hz to 120Hz, with an Always-On mode. Apple rates it for 1,000 nits typical, 1,600 nits peak in HDR and up to 2,000 nits outdoors.
The rear cameras are a 48MP main (f/1.78, sensor-shift stabilization), a 12MP telephoto (f/2.8, 5x optical zoom, 120 mm) and a 12MP ultrawide (f/2.2, 120 degrees), plus a LiDAR scanner. The front camera is 12MP with autofocus. Video goes up to 4K at 60 fps with ProRes support. SpecHub has not tested image quality.
Apple does not publish battery capacity. Independent sources report 4441 mAh, compared with 4383 mAh for the iPhone 15 Plus. Apple states about 50% in 30 minutes with a 20W or higher adapter, which is not included. Wireless charging supports MagSafe and Qi2 at up to 15W. We have no endurance tests, and an older battery may hold less charge today.
The phone launched with iOS 17 and supports Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.3, NFC and second-generation Ultra Wideband. It has Face ID, a LiDAR scanner, Crash Detection and Emergency SOS via satellite. The USB-C port supports USB 3 speeds of up to 10 Gbps, and the Action button replaces the mute switch.
Photographers who want long zoom, creators who move large video files over USB-C and anyone who wants the biggest 2023 iPhone screen will find it a good match.
Buyers who want a lighter phone or a lower price should look at the iPhone 15 Plus or the iPhone 15 Pro. Those who want newer features such as Camera Control should consider an iPhone 16 or later.
The iPhone 15 Pro Max combined a titanium body, USB 3, the A17 Pro chip and a 5x telephoto lens. Its weight and the absence of a 128GB tier are the main trade-offs.
