This is an editorial analysis of the specifications listed on this page. It is not based on SpecHub lab testing, so it makes no claims about benchmarks, battery life or camera results. Manufacturer lab figures are not reproduced here.
The iPhone 14 Pro Max is the largest model of Apple's 2022 lineup, released on September 16, 2022 at $1,099 in the US. It shares its chip, cameras and Dynamic Island with the iPhone 14 Pro, and adds a 6.7-inch screen and a bigger reported battery. It was aimed at buyers who wanted the biggest screen and the longest battery life. It is now an older phone.
The Apple A16 Bionic (4 nm) has a six-core CPU and a five-core GPU. Independent sources report 6GB of RAM, which Apple does not publish. Storage is 128GB, 256GB, 512GB or 1TB with no card slot. SpecHub has not benchmarked the phone.
The 6.7-inch LTPO Super Retina XDR OLED display has 1290 x 2796 pixels (about 460 ppi) and an adaptive 1-120Hz refresh rate. Apple rates it for 1,000 nits typical, 1,600 nits peak in HDR and up to 2,000 nits outdoors, and it supports an Always-On mode and the Dynamic Island.
The rear cameras are a 48MP main (f/1.78, sensor-shift stabilization), a 12MP telephoto (f/2.8, 3x optical zoom) and a 12MP ultrawide (f/2.2, 120 degrees), plus a LiDAR scanner. The front camera is 12MP with autofocus. Apple lists 4K video up to 60 fps, Cinematic mode and Action mode. SpecHub has not tested image quality.
Apple does not publish battery capacity. Independent sources report 4323 mAh, slightly smaller than the 4352 mAh reported for the iPhone 13 Pro Max. Apple states about 50% in 30 minutes with a 20W or higher adapter, which is not included. Wireless charging supports MagSafe at up to 15W and Qi at up to 7.5W. We have no endurance tests, and an older battery may hold less charge today.
The phone launched with iOS 16 and supports 5G, Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.3, NFC and Ultra Wideband. It has Face ID, Crash Detection, Emergency SOS via satellite and an IP68 rating up to 6 metres for 30 minutes. SIM options differ by market, with US models eSIM only.
Heavy video watchers, travellers and anyone who wants the largest iPhone screen and a long reported battery in an older phone will find it a good fit.
Buyers who want a lighter phone should choose the iPhone 14 Pro. Those who want USB-C or newer features should look at a more recent iPhone.
The iPhone 14 Pro Max combined ProMotion, the Dynamic Island, a 48MP camera and a big battery. Its weight and Lightning port are the main limits today.
